Possible complications are abdominal hernias. Hernias are caused by a defect in the abdominal wall which allows the intestines to bulge around the ostomy site. Obesity, heavy lifting, coughing are some of the factors that increase pressure in the abdominal cavity and may contribute to developing a hernia. Using a support binder after surgery may reduce the incidence of parastomal hernias. If you have developed a hernia, a support belt will assist in providing support to the area around the stoma decreasing the bulge and improving the pouching system seal. It is important to follow up with your surgeon if you have developed a hernia.
